Trick-or-Treat

One of my favorite parts of Halloween is picking out and preparing treats for our trick-or-treaters.  Generally we only get about five or six kids, but last year we were so happy to have twelve.  This year we’re hoping for even more!

If you’re looking to save money while also creating memorable treat bags for your trick-or-treaters, there are several places that offer great deals on Halloween treats.  We were able to put together some really nice bags this year thanks to Oriental Trading, Walmart, and our local Kroger.  Don’t be afraid to order part of your goodies online and search locally for the rest.  It’s unfortunate that so many people think they need to source all of their Halloween candy and treats in one spot.  By taking your time and purchasing from multiple places not only can you save money, but you can get exactly what you want.

For 2017 we decided to put together two different treat bags– one for younger kids and one for older kids.  I always like to coordinate treats as much as possible, but if I find something I think the kids can’t live without that doesn’t exactly fit the rest of the items in the bag, I buy it anyway!  After all, the number one goal here is to put big smiles on the faces of children.  This year I decided to go with a color scheme of orange, purple, and green for the younger kids after looking through Oriental Trading’s lineup and finding these adorable arching cats.  Some of the reviews on these little kitties docked stars for quality, but personally, I was impressed with the quality for the price– eyes and noses in the right places and no holes with stuffing coming out.  These are great little stuffed animals.  I also grabbed  a dozen Halloween-themed rubber duckies from Oriental Trading as well.

“After all, the number one goal here is to put big smiles on the faces of children.”

The rest of the items I spent time searching for at our local Walmart and Kroger.  I found the glow sticks at Kroger one week, then waited for them to go on sale.  I got a heck of a deal on them.  I also remembered that our local Walmart sells single cans of Play-Doh at a really great price.  I like that I can select only the colors I want by purchasing single cans.

My favorite treat bag this year though has got to be the big kid one!  I am totally in love with these Spookadelic favor boxes from Oriental Trading.  In fact the entire Spookadelic lineup is really cool!  It was hard not to order everything from that line to be honest.  In my opinion the boxes made the biggest impression, so I ordered them along with with paint splatter fidget spinners, although Oriental Trading has a great selection of other fidget spinners as well.  Regarding the paint splatter fidget spinners, they do make some sound when you spin them, and obviously these aren’t competition spinners for the price, but much like the arching cats, I was totally happy with the quality of these spinners for the price.

From our local Walmart I sourced some little stretchy skeletons in line with the color scheme of the boxes as well as some LED flashlights that I found in the Halloween section there.  I topped the boxes off with glow sticks from the sale at Kroger.

For the candy, I selected a few pieces from Oriental Trading then sourced the traditional candy from Walmart.  I will say that I wish I’d color coordinated the candy better and selected some purple and green candy as opposed to the black candy and haunted house candy, but there’s always next year.

When it came time to pack the bags and boxes, I set up a little assembly line, and our son had a blast putting everything together.   I’m so thankful that he loves these projects as much as I do and wants to get involved.  It made for a great memory and counting game, too as I told him at the beginning how many of each item went in the bags and boxes, and he had to remember those numbers and count them each time.  We had such a great evening putting these things together!

There’s still time to order Halloween goodies and make awesome treat bags for the trick-or-treaters in your neighborhood!  This is the first year we’ve used Oriental Trading for Halloween, and I’m really happy with the great deals and super cute treats we were able to get.  Give it a shot, and put a smile a child’s face!

This week we’ll be decorating for Halloween so stay tuned for Halloween: McNemar House-Style!
